Historical sources may include documents, images , artefacts and audio or video recordings.

Primary sources are contemporaneous to the event under study (first hand evidence).
Diaries, artefacts, autobiographies , photographs letters and recordings are all examples of primary sources

Secondary sources  provides commentary and information on an event from other researchers (second hand evidence)
Textbooks, dissertations,  newspaper opinion  pieces, and biographies are all examples of secondary sources
